Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in the first meeting?

The initial 1-3 sessions are usually used to discuss your reasons for seeking therapy as well as clarify your goals and expectations. We will also discuss what approach would suit you best and whether Janis is the right person to work with you. If we decide to carry on working together we will agree on an initial number of sessions which we will review on a regular basis. If you are unsure about what your difficulties are you can still come for an assessment and we could discuss whether psychological therapy is the best way forward for you.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the issue(s) you wish to address and resolve. Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) are often short to medium term (up to 24 sessions). Short-term therapy is generally effective in resolving a specific crisis or a problem. Schema therapy is often longer (6 months +) when working on breaking established patterns of thinking, feeling, behaving and relating.

What is the difference between a psychiatrist, psychologist, psychotherapist and counsellor?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in psychiatry and, unlike psychologists, psychotherapists or counsellors, are permitted to prescribe medication for psychological problems.

Psychologists have a degree in psychology and are subsequently trained in specialist areas such as clinical, counselling, educational, forensic or other fields.

Counselling psychologists are trained to practice fluently at least two models of evidence-based therapies. A large number of Counselling Psychologists work in the NHS.

It is difficult to draw a clear distinction between psychotherapists and counsellors and it is often a matter of opinion. However, generally psychotherapy training tends to be longer and their work focuses on deep, long-term changes in the client’s thinking and behaviour. Counsellors often concentrate on specific issues and seek a way to resolve them together with the client.

Does my private healthcare cover the sessions?

London Psychological Therapy accepts referrals from all major private health care insurers in the UK and overseas, including: BUPA, AXA PPP, AVIVA, CIGNA and Vitality.

Is the service confidential?

What is the cancellation policy?

48 hours’ notice is required to avoid a full charge of the session regardless of reason.

What are the costs?
